Description
Systematic position. The large plume moth (Oidaematophorus grandis) belongs to the order Lepidoptera, family Pterophoridae. These insects are well-known for their unique feather-like wings, which provide excellent camouflage when they rest on plant stems or leaves.
Host plants. This species primarily feeds on plants within the Asteraceae family. While it often associates with specific wild weeds, it can occasionally impact ornamental gardens and certain commercial crops that share similar botanical characteristics with its natural hosts.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa, and adult. They typically overwinter in the soil or within plant debris in the pupal stage. As temperatures rise in spring, adults emerge, mate, and deposit eggs on the undersides of leaves to ensure a food supply for the hatching larvae.
Damage and economic impact. The larvae are the primary damaging stage. They consume leaf tissue, often mining into the foliage or feeding on flower buds. Severe infestations lead to stunted plant growth, loss of foliage, and reduced flower production, which is particularly detrimental for commercial plant nurseries.
Control measures. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is recommended to control Oidaematophorus grandis populations effectively:
- Sanitation by removing and destroying infested plant material post-harvest.
- Tillage practices to disrupt pupal habitats in the soil during winter.
- Biological control using predators or specific microbial insecticides like Bacillus thuringiensis.
