Calanthe weevil

Omobaris calanthes is a species of weevil belonging to the family Curculionidae (True Weevils) and the order Coleoptera (Beetles). This pest is a significant concern for botanical collections and orchid hobbyists, as it specifically targets certain types of tropical flora, causing aesthetic and physiological damage to plants in their natural and greenhouse environments.

The primary hosts for this weevil are plants within the Calanthe genus. The adult weevils feed on the exterior tissues of leaves and flower spikes, while the larvae are internal feeders. Due to this feeding habit, the damage often remains unnoticed until the host plant shows severe signs of stress, such as wilting or structural collapse of the stems.

The biological cycle of this pest involves the female laying eggs inside the plant tissue, specifically targeting the pseudobulbs or developing spikes. Once hatched, the larvae bore into the interior of the plant, creating tunnels as they feed on the nutrient-rich pith. This concealed stage of development protects the larvae from environmental stressors and many common surface-applied pesticides.

Damage caused by Omobaris calanthes is often irreversible. The tunneling larvae destroy the vascular system of the host, leading to stunted growth, distorted foliage, and the complete abortion of flower spikes. Furthermore, the tunnels provide ideal conditions for opportunistic fungi and bacteria, which can cause secondary rots that may kill the entire plant if left unmanaged.

Effective management strategies require a combination of preventative and curative measures:

• Regular monitoring of Calanthe collections for small entry holes and signs of necrosis.
• Immediate isolation and quarantine of infested plants to prevent the spread to healthy stock.
• Systemic insecticide application, which is crucial for controlling larvae feeding within the plant tissues.
• Pruning and destroying infested plant parts to reduce the population of developing larvae.
• Ensuring proper greenhouse hygiene to minimize overwintering sites for adult weevils.
