Opuntia scale

The Opuntia scale (scientific name: Opuntiaspis carinata) is a specialized insect pest belonging to the Diaspididae family. Classified within the order Hemiptera, this scale insect is a significant concern for botanical collections, nurseries, and hobbyist growers who focus on cactus and succulent cultivation.

The primary hosts for Opuntiaspis carinata are plants within the Cactaceae family, with a strong preference for Opuntia species. Due to their ability to blend in with the texture of cactus stems, these insects often go unnoticed until a full-scale infestation has developed across the plant collection.

The life cycle involves an egg stage, a mobile crawler stage, and a sessile adult stage. Adult females are protected by a rigid, keel-shaped shield which acts as a physical barrier against environmental threats and many contact insecticides. These insects thrive in warm, stable climates typical of glasshouses, allowing for multiple generations per year.

Damage caused by the Opuntia scale is primarily due to phloem-sap feeding. This process drains the plant of vital nutrients, resulting in localized chlorosis, stunted growth, and visible pitting on the stems. Furthermore, the feeding wounds create entry points for secondary pathogens, which may lead to rot or tissue necrosis.

Effective management requires a multi-faceted approach. Mechanical removal can be useful for small infestations, but chemical intervention is often necessary for severe outbreaks. Systemic insecticides, which are absorbed by the plant tissues, are generally the most effective method for long-term control, as they target the insects during their feeding process. Consistent monitoring and strict quarantine protocols for new plants are essential for prevention.
