The primary hosts for Opuntiaspis carinata are plants within the Cactaceae family, with a strong preference for Opuntia species. Due to their ability to blend in with the texture of cactus stems, these insects often go unnoticed until a full-scale infestation has developed across the plant collection.
The life cycle involves an egg stage, a mobile crawler stage, and a sessile adult stage. Adult females are protected by a rigid, keel-shaped shield which acts as a physical barrier against environmental threats and many contact insecticides.
