Flea weevil

The genus Orchestes, belonging to the family Curculionidae and the order Coleoptera, includes a group of insects known as flea weevils. These small beetles possess characteristic thickened hind femora, which allow them to perform sudden jumps when threatened, making them difficult to detect and manage in forestry and ornamental plantings.

The pest primarily attacks deciduous trees and shrubs, including willow, birch, alder, beech, and oak. In various ecosystems, the larvae of these beetles live a concealed life, mining the interior of the leaves, while the adults feed on the surface, creating characteristic holes and causing mechanical damage to the leaf tissue, which inhibits the plant's photosynthetic capacity.

The life cycle of the species is closely synchronized with the phenology of its host plants. It includes four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females deposit eggs inside the leaf tissue. Upon hatching, the larvae construct mines or tunnels within the leaf. Pupation typically occurs within the leaf tissue in a protective chamber, followed by the emergence of the adult beetle.

The primary symptom of infestation is the presence of brown blotch mines and numerous small holes in the foliage. Under conditions of high population density, premature leaf drying and shedding occur, which weakens the trees, reduces their overall health and vigor, and impairs their aesthetic value. Severe infestations can lead to significant defoliation of the crown.

Control strategies involve a combination of integrated pest management practices:

• Sanitation, including the collection and disposal of fallen leaves that may harbor pupae or overwintering adults.
• Promotion of natural biodiversity to support predators such as birds and parasitic wasps.
• Application of systemic and contact insecticides during the peak activity period of the adult beetles.
• Monitoring pest populations using visual inspections and trapping methods.
