Description
The orchid weevil (Orchidophilus) is a genus of insects belonging to the Curculionidae family. These pests are highly specialized, targeting various species of orchids. Given their ability to remain undetected for long periods, they represent a significant threat to both commercial orchid nurseries and private indoor plant collections.
Both adult beetles and larvae contribute to plant damage. Adult orchid weevils feed on the leaves and stems, causing unsightly scarring and feeding marks. However, the larvae are the most destructive stage; they bore into the pseudo-bulbs and succulent roots, consuming the internal tissues and severely compromising the plant's vascular system.
The biological lifecycle of Orchidophilus is characterized by endophytism, meaning the development occurs entirely within the plant tissue. The female deposits eggs inside the orchid, and the emerging larvae feed on the internal structures. This internal development makes conventional contact pesticides largely ineffective, as they cannot reach the larvae sheltered inside the plant.
Typical signs of an infestation include the presence of small, circular exit or entrance holes on the stems or leaves, general decline in plant vigor, and sudden wilting. In advanced stages, the plant's stems or bulbs may collapse, turn brown, and rot due to the internal tunneling activity of the larvae.
