The orchid weevil (Orchidophilus curvirostris) is a specialized pest that primarily targets orchid plants. It belongs to the family Curculionidae within the order Coleoptera. These beetles are characterized by their long, curved snouts, which they use to penetrate the tough outer layers of orchid stems, pseudobulbs, and leaves.
The host range of this pest is limited to various species within the Orchidaceae family. The weevil is particularly notorious for infesting popular cultivated genera such as Dendrobium, Cattleya, and Vanda. It often thrives in environments where humidity is high and plant density is significant, making greenhouses a prime location for outbreaks.
The life cycle of Orchidophilus curvirostris is primarily cryptic. The female deposits eggs into small holes chewed into the plant's tissue. Upon hatching, the larvae tunnel deep inside, feeding on internal plant structures, which creates extensive galleries. Development, including the pupal stage, occurs within the plant tissue, protecting the developing insects from external environmental factors.
The damage caused by this weevil is often severe and can be difficult to notice until it is advanced. External signs include small, circular exit holes on the stems and leaves, as well as withered or decaying pseudobulbs. Internally, the larvae destroy vascular tissues, which disrupts water and nutrient transport, leading to yellowing, loss of turgor, and the eventual collapse of the orchid.
Effective management requires a combination of cultural practices and chemical intervention. Early detection through regular inspection is critical. Infested parts of the plant should be pruned and destroyed immediately. To control the hidden larvae, the application of systemic insecticides is necessary, as these chemicals are translocated through the plant tissues to reach the larvae living inside the orchid.
