Description

The Orchid weevil (Orchidophilus peregrinator) is a specialized insect pest belonging to the Curculionidae family. This beetle is notorious among orchid growers for its ability to devastate rare and valuable collections by feeding on the internal tissues of the host plants.

This pest primarily attacks various genera of orchids, including Dendrobium, Vanda, and Cattleya. It thrives in humid conditions typical of greenhouse environments, where it can reproduce continuously throughout the year if temperatures remain favorable for its development.

The biological cycle of Orchidophilus peregrinator consists of four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The female lays eggs into the soft plant tissues. The larvae are the most destructive stage; upon hatching, they tunnel into the plant’s pseudobulbs or stems, feeding on the interior parts and destroying the plant's vascular system.

Damage caused by the orchid weevil is often hidden until the plant shows signs of sudden decline. Adults feed on leaves and flower buds, creating deep punctures, while larvae hollow out stems. This physical damage drastically weakens the plant, making it susceptible to secondary bacterial and fungal pathogens.
