Mealy flatid planthopper

The mealy flatid planthopper (Ormenis pulverulenta) is an insect species within the family Flatidae, order Hemiptera. These insects are characterized by their flattened bodies and the unique white, waxy secretion produced by the nymphs, which protects them from predators and environmental stress, giving them a mealy appearance.

This pest has a wide host range, frequently infesting ornamental shrubs, fruit trees, and various agricultural crops. By positioning themselves along stems and leaf veins, these planthoppers create dense colonies that can weaken young, vigorously growing plants significantly.

The life cycle involves incomplete metamorphosis. Females lay eggs in the woody tissues of the host plant. Upon hatching, the nymphs begin feeding on plant sap. As they mature through several instars, they rely on their waxy coating for defense, eventually emerging as winged adults capable of jumping and short-distance flight.

Direct damage is caused by the extraction of phloem sap, which leads to stunted growth, leaf chlorosis, and general loss of plant vigor. Indirectly, these insects secrete honeydew—a sugary substance that coats the leaves and serves as a substrate for sooty mold fungi, which inhibits photosynthesis and diminishes the aesthetic and commercial value of the crop.

Effective management requires an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach to minimize chemical reliance. Practitioners should prioritize early detection and the following strategies:

• Regular scouting of plant foliage for waxy white accumulations.
• Pruning and destroying heavily infested plant parts to reduce the initial population.
• Application of horticultural oils or insecticidal soaps that dissolve the protective waxy layer.
• Encouraging natural predators such as lady beetles and lacewings that feed on planthopper nymphs.
