Violet weevil

The violet weevil (Orobitis cyaneus) is a small beetle belonging to the family Curculionidae (order Coleoptera). This insect is known for its distinctive globular shape and a deep, metallic blue-black coloration. It is a specialized pest that specifically targets plants within the Viola genus, making it a point of concern for both botanists and gardeners.

The primary hosts for this species include various wild and ornamental violet species. Both adult beetles and their larvae rely on these plants throughout their life cycle. Adults are typically found feeding on the foliage during the spring, while the developing larvae are entirely dependent on the seeds within the developing capsules of the plant.

The life cycle begins with overwintered adults emerging from soil debris in early spring. Once the plants begin to set seed, the females lay eggs into the young capsules. The larvae then hatch and burrow into the seed pod, consuming the developing seeds as they mature. Once the larvae complete their development, they drop to the ground to pupate in the soil, effectively completing the generation.

The economic and aesthetic damage caused by this insect is significant. Adults leave small, round feeding punctures in the leaves, which can affect the plant's vigor. However, the most severe damage is reproductive: the larvae destroy the seeds within the capsules, leading to a complete loss of seed production for infested plants, which is critical for species preservation and nursery propagation.

Management of the violet weevil requires a combination of vigilance and targeted action. Cultural practices are the most effective initial defense: gardeners should inspect violet patches for damaged or discolored seed pods and remove them immediately to prevent the larvae from exiting and entering the soil. In cases of severe infestations, chemical control using approved insecticides may be necessary during the peak adult activity period in late spring.
