Systematic position: The Elephant beetle (Orthorhinus cylindrirostris) is a member of the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. This species is well-known in agricultural circles as a wood-boring pest that poses a significant threat to various woody plant species.

Host plants and pest status: The pest targets a diverse range of host plants, including fruit trees, citrus, grapevines, and native trees like eucalyptus. It is particularly problematic in orchard environments and urban landscapes where it can undermine the structural integrity of ornamental and productive plantings.

Biology and lifecycle: The lifecycle of Orthorhinus cylindrirostris is predominantly wood-based. Adult females deposit eggs into crevices in the tree bark. Upon hatching, the larvae tunnel into the wood, where they remain to feed and grow. This internal development makes them invisible to casual observation during the most destructive stages of their lifecycle.

Damage and economic impact: Larval feeding activities create extensive galleries within the branches and trunks. This tunnelling disrupts nutrient and water transport, leading to branch dieback, general tree decline, and increased susceptibility to secondary infections or mechanical failure. In severe cases, particularly with younger trees, the damage can lead to total mortality.

Control measures: Managing this pest is challenging due to the larvae's protected environment deep within the wood. Effective control strategies include:
