Klug's weevil

Orthorhinus klugi

Description

Systematic position. Orthorhinus klugi belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae (true weevils). This species is native to Australia and is recognized as a significant pest of various woody plants, particularly those in forest and ornamental ecosystems.

Host plants. The weevil attacks a variety of tree species. Eucalypts are primary hosts, but the insect also affects many other ornamental and fruit-bearing trees. It poses a threat to both young, developing saplings and fully mature, established trees by disrupting their vascular functions.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Orthorhinus klugi is deeply integrated with the host tree's wood. Females deposit eggs into cracks or existing wounds in the bark. Upon hatching, the larvae tunnel into the xylem to feed, progressing through several larval instars inside the tree. Pupation also occurs within these galleries before the adults emerge.

Nature of damage and harmfulness. The damage is primarily caused by larvae boring tunnels into the sapwood and heartwood. This activity severely compromises the tree's structural integrity and its ability to transport nutrients and water. Furthermore, these galleries facilitate the entry of pathogens, leading to fungal decay and increasing the risk of mechanical failure of branches or the tree itself.

Control measures. Managing Orthorhinus klugi is challenging due to the concealed larval feeding stage. Integrated pest management includes:

  • Regular inspection of bark and branches for signs of tunneling or exit holes.
  • Sanitation pruning and destruction of infested wood to reduce population density.
  • Application of systemic insecticides during the peak activity period of adult beetles.
  • Maintaining tree vigor through proper irrigation and fertilization to improve natural defense mechanisms.
