Description
Systematic position: The angular bark beetle (Orthotomicus angulatus) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae (subfamily Scolytinae). This species is recognized as a specific stem pest affecting various conifer tree species within temperate forest ecosystems.
Host plants: The primary host for this beetle is the Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris). While it often colonizes weakened or stressed trees, it can also attack healthy stands, particularly during periods of environmental stress, such as severe droughts that reduce the tree's natural defense mechanisms.
Biology and life cycle: The lifecycle occurs beneath the bark of the host tree. Adult beetles initiate the colonization process by boring tunnels where they mate and lay eggs. Larvae hatch and excavate galleries feeding on the inner bark and cambium layer. They typically overwinter as adults or larvae within the bark or the forest floor litter layer.
Nature of damage: The damage is caused by the larval and adult galleries that girdle the tree, effectively cutting off the supply of water and nutrients from the roots to the crown. Infested trees show symptoms such as yellowing or browning needles, thinning crowns, and the accumulation of frass around the base of the trunk or in bark crevices.
Protection measures: Effective management includes strict sanitation practices, such as the rapid removal and destruction of infested timber before the new generation of adults emerges. Integrated pest management (IPM) strategies often utilize pheromone traps for population monitoring and encourage the maintenance of overall forest health to prevent mass outbreaks.
