Host trees: This pest primarily attacks various species of pine (Pinus), spruce (Picea), and occasionally larch (Larix). While it shows a distinct preference for stressed, weakened, or freshly downed timber, significant population outbreaks can lead to successful attacks on healthy, vigorous trees.

Biology and life cycle: The species overwinters in the duff layer beneath trees or within the bark of host hosts. As spring temperatures rise, adult beetles emerge to locate suitable host material. Females bore into the bark, constructing galleries where they deposit eggs. Upon hatching, larvae feed on the cambium and inner bark, constructing their own distinct tunnels.

Damage and economic impact: Signs of infestation include the presence of reddish-brown boring dust at the tree base and small round entry holes on the bark. The network of galleries disrupts the tree's vascular system, hindering the transport of water and nutrients.
