Systematic position: The Mediterranean pine engraver (Orthotomicus erosus) is a beetle species belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae (subfamily Scolytinae). As a technical pest, it plays a significant role in the degradation of pine forests across its distribution range, which spans the Mediterranean region, Europe, and parts of Asia.

Host plants: This pest primarily targets coniferous trees, with a strong preference for the Pinus genus. Scots pine, Aleppo pine, and maritime pine are among its most common hosts. While it often attacks weakened or stressed trees, in cases of high population density, it can also infest healthy trees, leading to widespread mortality in pine stands.

Biology and lifecycle: The lifecycle of the beetle is closely tied to environmental temperature. Adults hibernate in the bark of the lower trunk or in the forest litter. As spring temperatures rise, the adults emerge to seek suitable host trees. Females construct galleries under the bark to lay eggs. Depending on the climate, the species can produce multiple generations per year, which significantly increases its destructive potential.

Damage and impact: The larvae and adults feed on the phloem and cambium layers of the trunk. This activity disrupts the transport of water and nutrients, effectively girdling the tree. Visible signs of infestation include tiny entry holes, accumulation of frass (boring dust) on the bark surface, and subsequent canopy thinning followed by the death of the tree.

Control measures: Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for managing this species. The most effective strategies include:

  • Sanitation logging: Removing and processing infested trees before the next generation of adults emerges.
  • Proper log management: Ensuring fresh timber is not left in the forest during the beetle's flight season.
  • Felling traps: Using trap logs to attract beetles for subsequent removal.
  • Monitoring: Deploying pheromone-baited traps to track population trends and timing for control actions.
