Systematic position: The Small pine engraver (Orthotomicus latidens) belongs to the order Coleoptera, family Curculionidae, and subfamily Scolytinae. It is a wood-boring beetle that primarily acts as a secondary pest, meaning it targets trees already stressed by drought, wind damage, or other factors, though it can become aggressive in high densities.

Affected crops: This beetle primarily infests pine species, especially Scots pine. It can also colonize spruce and other coniferous trees. The pests are commonly found in commercial timber stands, plantations, and parks, where they exploit stressed or fallen trees to initiate their reproductive cycle.

Biology and life cycle: The lifecycle of Orthotomicus latidens is closely tied to the host tree's condition. Adult beetles overwinter under the bark. In spring, they emerge to mate and excavate gallery systems beneath the bark of the host tree. Females lay eggs along these galleries, and upon hatching, the larvae feed on the cambium layer, creating distinct mining tunnels.

Nature of damage and harm: The feeding activity of larvae and adults disrupts the flow of nutrients and water within the tree. This often leads to the gradual decline and eventual death of the tree if the infestation is severe.
