Description
Systematic position. The Tosa bark beetle (Orthotomicus tosaensis) belongs to the order Coleoptera, family Curculionidae, and subfamily Scolytinae. It is a specialized wood-boring insect primarily found in East Asia. As an aggressive colonizer of coniferous bark, it plays a significant role in forest ecology by attacking weakened trees, though it can become a primary pest under favorable environmental conditions.
Host plants. The primary hosts for this species are various coniferous trees, including species of spruce (Picea) and pine (Pinus). The beetle is particularly attracted to trees that are stressed by environmental factors like drought, pollution, or defoliation.
