Taxonomic position: Oryctes augias is a member of the Coleoptera order, belonging to the Scarabaeidae family and the Dynastinae subfamily. It is recognized as a serious pest in the Pacific region, distinguished by its specific preference for palm tissues, which differentiates its impact from other scarab beetles that primarily feed on decaying matter during their adult stage.

Host plants: The primary host plants for this species are members of the Arecaceae family, most notably the coconut palm (Cocos nucifera). While the larvae are saprophagous and prefer decaying organic matter, the adults are aggressive phytophages, targeting the apical meristem or "cabbage" of the palm tree to feed on vital sap and young tissues.

Biology and life cycle: The development of Oryctes augias consists of a complete metamorphosis. The female beetle lays eggs in organic waste, such as decomposing palm trunks, compost piles, or sawdust. The larval stage, which can last several months, is spent within this substrate, while the pupal stage occurs in a cell formed in the soil or decaying debris. Adults emerge and migrate to palm canopies to feed and mate.

Damage and severity: Damage is caused by adults boring into the crown of the palm. As they penetrate the tightly packed unexpanded leaves, they create deep, ragged channels. Once the palm leaves emerge, the damage manifests as V-shaped or triangular cuts, which are diagnostic indicators of infestation. Severe attacks can destroy the growing point, leading to the death of the palm tree.

Control measures: Sustainable management relies on an integrated approach. Sanitation is the most critical step, involving the removal or chemical treatment of breeding sites (rotting logs and piles). Additionally, the deployment of synthetic aggregation pheromone traps is standard practice for suppression. Biological control programs using the fungus Metarhizium anisopliae or the Oryctes rhinoceros nudivirus (OrNV) are highly effective in reducing larval populations in the environment.
