Systematic position: The East African rhinoceros beetle, Oryctes boas, is a member of the order Coleoptera and the family Scarabaeidae. This insect is a significant agricultural pest in tropical Africa, recognized for its substantial impact on plantations and natural ecosystems where it feeds on specific woody plant species.

Host plants: The primary hosts of this beetle are species of the family Arecaceae, most notably the coconut palm (Cocos nucifera) and date palms (Phoenix dactylifera). Beyond palms, the insect has been observed attacking sugarcane crops, where the adult beetles damage the growing shoots, causing stunted growth and reduced productivity in the plantation.

Biology and life cycle: The lifecycle of Oryctes boas involves a complete metamorphosis comprising egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Females lay eggs in decaying organic matter such as compost, manure, or rotting logs. The larvae develop within these substrates, feeding on organic debris. Once they reach maturity, they pupate and eventually emerge as adults to begin the reproductive cycle again.

Nature of damage and pest status: The adult beetle is the primary cause of concern. It utilizes its strong mandibles to bore into the crowns or the growing points of palm trees. These deep excavations damage the vascular tissues of the tree, leading to physical weakening and creating entry points for secondary infections by pathogens, which often result in the death of the host plant.

Control measures: Management of Oryctes boas is largely focused on sanitation and biological control:

• Elimination of breeding sites by clearing decaying organic matter and rotting wood from fields.
• Application of pheromone traps to attract and capture adult beetles during their peak flight activity.
• Use of biological control agents, such as specific fungi (e.g., Metarhizium anisopliae) or baculoviruses that target beetle populations.
• Implementation of regular monitoring and maintenance of plantation hygiene to prevent infestation buildup.
