Systematic position: The rhinoceros beetle centaurus (Oryctes centaurus) belongs to the order Coleoptera, family Scarabaeidae, and subfamily Dynastinae. This species is a significant pest known for its destructive impact on tropical agricultural plantations, particularly within the palm-growing regions where it competes with other related dynastine species.

Host plants: The primary hosts for this beetle are members of the Arecaceae family, most notably the coconut palm (Cocos nucifera) and the oil palm (Elaeis guineensis). Adult beetles are attracted to the soft tissues of the apical meristem, which serves as their primary feeding site, causing direct physiological damage to the host plant.

Biology and life cycle: Like other members of the genus Oryctes, this beetle undergoes a complete metamorphosis. Eggs are laid in decaying organic matter, such as dead palm trunks, compost heaps, or decomposing plant refuse. The larvae develop within these substrates, feeding on decaying wood, before pupating and emerging as adults capable of flying long distances to locate new host plants.

Damage and pest status: Adult beetles cause characteristic damage by boring into the crowns of palms. As they chew through the emerging unopened fronds, they leave behind V-shaped or irregular holes that become visible once the leaf expands. Severely infested palms may exhibit stunted growth, reduced nut production, and increased susceptibility to secondary infections and opportunistic pests.

Control measures: Management strategies rely on sanitation and biological control. The most effective cultural practice is the removal and destruction of potential breeding sites, such as rotting logs and piles of organic waste near plantations. Integrated pest management (IPM) also utilizes pheromone traps to monitor and reduce adult populations, along with the application of entomopathogenic fungi like Metarhizium to control larval stages in the soil.
