Description

Systematic position. The colonial rhinoceros beetle, known as Oryctes colonicus, belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Scarabaeidae (subfamily Dynastinae). It is a significant member of the rhinoceros beetle group, recognized by its specific physiological adaptations and typical scarab-like life cycle.

Host plants and damage. This pest primarily attacks perennial plants and plantation crops, with a strong affinity for palm species. Adult beetles cause severe mechanical injury by boring into the soft tissues of the crown and young shoots, which weakens the host plant and creates entry points for various phytopathogens.

Biology and lifecycle. The lifecycle consists of four stages: egg, larva (grub), pupa, and adult. The females deposit their eggs in decaying organic matter, such as dead wood, sawdust, or compost piles. The larval stage is long-lasting, as grubs feed on organic debris and accumulate energy for the transformation into the pupal stage.

Nature of injury. The economic importance of this insect is linked to both its adult and larval forms. While adults destroy the apical meristem of trees, larvae dwelling in the ground can severely damage the root systems of nearby crops, causing growth suppression and, in extreme cases, the total collapse of the plant vascular system.

Control measures. Protecting plantations from Oryctes colonicus requires integrated pest management strategies. Key actions include:

  • Elimination of breeding sites by removing rotting wood and compost accumulation.
  • Deployment of pheromone traps to monitor adult population density and reduce mating opportunities.
  • Application of biological control agents, such as Metarhizium anisopliae fungus, to infect and control larvae in the soil.
  • Implementation of targeted insecticide sprays during peak flight periods for adults.
