Description
Systematic position: Oryctes latecavatus belongs to the order Coleoptera, family Scarabaeidae, and subfamily Dynastinae. As a member of the rhinoceros beetle group, this species is specialized in tropical environments where it acts as a primary pest for various tree species, particularly those of economic importance.
Host plants and economic importance: The beetle primarily infests palm trees (Arecaceae), with coconut and oil palms being the most susceptible. Adults are considered the destructive stage, as they target the apical meristem or the "heart" of the palm. Their feeding activity significantly impacts the tree's health, causing stunted growth, reduced fruit production, and in severe infestations, the complete death of the palm tree.
Biology and life cycle: The species undergoes complete metamorphosis. Females deposit eggs in decaying organic matter, such as dead palm logs, sawdust, or compost piles. The larvae emerge and spend their entire developmental phase within this decaying material, feeding on organic debris. Once the larvae mature, they pupate in the substrate before emerging as adult beetles, which are then capable of flight and infestation.
Damage patterns: The adult beetles are nocturnal and fly to the tops of healthy palms. They bore into the central spear leaf, damaging the tissues before the leaf unfurls. When the damaged leaf finally opens, it displays characteristic V-shaped notches or symmetrical holes. This damage not only stunts the development of the tree but also creates entry points for secondary pests and various pathogens that can further compromise the tree.
