European rhinoceros beetle

The European rhinoceros beetle (Oryctes nasicornis) is a member of the Scarabaeidae family, belonging to the order Coleoptera. Recognized by the prominent horn-like protrusion on the head of males, this beetle is typically considered a saproxylic species; however, it can become an occasional pest in nurseries, orchards, and vineyards when populations surge.

The species primarily affects weakened trees, woody shrubs, and ornamental plants. While adult beetles consume sap, the most significant damage is caused by the larvae, which reside in decaying wood, compost piles, and soil. When these habitats are near cultivated plants, the larvae readily consume the root systems of healthy crops.

The biological cycle of this insect is prolonged, typically spanning 3 to 4 years from egg to adult. The larvae remain in the soil or decaying organic matter for most of this period. Adults emerge during the summer months, showing nocturnal behavior and flying to trees, where they feed on sap and search for suitable egg-laying sites in decomposing organic materials.

Damage is characterized by root pruning and destruction of the root zone, which severely weakens young plants and seedlings. In nurseries, large infestations can lead to high mortality rates of saplings. Furthermore, adult feeding can sometimes damage the bark and wood of trees, creating entry points for fungal infections and other secondary pathogens that threaten the health of the host.

Effective management strategies focus on habitat disruption and biological control. Essential steps include:

• Removing rotting wood, stumps, and old sawdust piles from the vicinity of crops.
• Frequent soil cultivation to expose and destroy larvae present in the substrate.
• Using entomopathogenic fungi or specialized soil-applied insecticides in highly infested nursery areas.
• Maintaining healthy plant vigor to ensure resistance against secondary damage.
