Description
Systematic position: Oryctes owariensis belongs to the order Coleoptera, family Scarabaeidae, and subfamily Dynastinae. As a member of the rhinoceros beetle group, this species is well-adapted to the tropical environments of Africa, where it has evolved to utilize organic decomposition sites while impacting economically important palm species.
Host plants: The primary hosts for this beetle are palm species, with significant preference for oil palms (Elaeis guineensis) and coconut palms. In areas of intensive cultivation, both juvenile plants and mature trees are susceptible to attacks, leading to substantial losses in oil and fiber production across the region.
Biology and life cycle: The lifecycle consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females typically deposit eggs in decaying organic matter, such as rotting wood, leaf litter, or palm residues. The larvae feed on the organic material, undergoing several instars before forming a pupal chamber. Adults are primarily nocturnal and are strong fliers, seeking out fresh palm tissue for feeding.
Damage and harmfulness: Adults cause the most severe damage by boring into the crown of the palm to reach the growing point (meristem). This activity results in V-shaped cuts in the emerging fronds, stunted growth, and canopy collapse. Severely affected palms may suffer from secondary infections or rot, eventually leading to the death of the tree if left untreated.
