Systematic position
The Madagascar rhinoceros beetle (Oryctes ranavalo) belongs to the order Coleoptera, family Scarabaeidae, and subfamily Dynastinae. As a member of the rhinoceros beetle group, this species is specifically adapted to the tropical ecosystems of Madagascar, where it acts as a primary herbivorous pest.

Host plants and damage
The beetle primarily targets various palm species. The adults are the damaging stage, using their hardened head structures to bore into the crowns of young palm trees. By feeding on the meristematic tissue and sap, they severely disrupt the structural integrity of the plant, often leading to stunted growth or total crown collapse.

Biology and life cycle
The life cycle involves complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The larval stage is saprophagous, living in decaying wood, rotting palm trunks, or moist organic soil. After completing its development, the larva builds a pupal chamber, from which the adult beetle emerges to begin its cycle of mating and feeding on the foliage of host trees.

Economic impact
Oryctes ranavalo is considered a significant threat to agricultural production. Beyond physical damage, the boreholes created by the beetles serve as entry points for secondary infections and pathogenic fungi that can cause systemic decay. Large-scale infestations often result in substantial economic losses, significantly reducing the yield and lifespan of commercial palm plantations.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling Oryctes ranavalo:

• Sanitation of the plantation area to eliminate breeding sites such as logs, sawdust, and compost.
• Deployment of aggregation pheromone traps to monitor and reduce adult beetle populations.
