Rhinoceros beetle (Oryctes trituberculatus)

Systematic position. The rhinoceros beetle Oryctes trituberculatus belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Scarabaeidae (subfamily Dynastinae). It is closely related to other palm-infesting species in the genus Oryctes, sharing characteristic morphological features such as the presence of three small tubercles or projections on the head of the males, which distinguishes it from related species.

Host plants. The primary hosts for this pest include various palm species, particularly the coconut palm (Cocos nucifera) and the oil palm (Elaeis guineensis). Occasionally, the beetle may attack other monocot crops or ornamental palm species, making it a significant economic threat to tropical agriculture and plantation management.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle comprises four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Eggs are typically laid in decomposing organic matter, such as decaying logs, sawdust, or compost heaps, which provide a necessary nutrient-rich environment for the larvae. After pupation, the adult beetles emerge and migrate to palm crowns to feed on fresh plant tissues.

Damage and economic impact. Adult beetles are the most damaging stage; they bore into the crown of the palm to feed on the tender, developing tissue of the central spear leaf. This results in V-shaped cuts or holes in the leaves once they unfurl. Severe infestations cause the death of the growing point (apical meristem), which can significantly stunt palm growth or lead to the total loss of the tree.
