Description
Osphilia is a genus of insects belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. These weevils are recognized in agricultural science as specialized pests that primarily target the reproductive structures of plants, causing significant economic damage to various legume crops.
The host range of Osphilia includes both wild and cultivated legumes. By attacking the developing seeds, these insects significantly reduce crop yield and quality. Because the larval stage is concealed within the fruit, the damage often remains unnoticed until the harvesting or processing stage, leading to post-harvest losses.
The life cycle of Osphilia is deeply linked to the phenology of the host plant. Female weevils oviposit directly into flowers or young seed pods. Upon hatching, the larvae burrow into the seed to feed, completing their development within the protected environment of the fruit before pupating either inside the pod or in the soil.
