Arctic vine weevil

The Arctic vine weevil (Otiorhynchus arcticus) is a member of the Curculionidae family, known for its significant impact on various plant species. As an adapted Arctic-alpine pest, it thrives in cooler environments, posing a particular threat to nurseries, orchards, and small fruit plantations that operate in northern regions.

This pest affects a wide range of host plants, including small fruits like strawberries, various berry shrubs, and ornamental plants. The root-feeding behavior of the larvae is particularly concerning for growers, as it can cause extensive damage to the root system, often going unnoticed until the host plant shows signs of severe stress or collapse.

The life cycle involves four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The adults are nocturnal feeders that consume leaf tissue, creating notched edges, whereas the larvae dwell underground. Larval development is slow and can span several years in certain environments, which makes the pest difficult to manage using standard crop rotation practices.

Adult feeding damage appears as characteristic semicircular notches along the leaf margins, which rarely kills the plant but reduces vigor. The larval stage is far more destructive, as they consume root hairs and taproots. This feeding disrupts water and nutrient uptake, eventually leading to stunted growth, yellowing foliage, and the eventual death of the plant.

Effective management strategies for Otiorhynchus arcticus require an integrated pest management (IPM) approach:

• Cultural controls such as tilling soil before planting to disrupt larval habitats.
• Application of biological agents, specifically entomopathogenic nematodes, to suppress larval populations in the soil.
• Nocturnal application of approved insecticides targeting adult beetles before they lay eggs.
• Use of physical barriers such as copper tapes or specialized mulch to limit the movement of adults towards the foliage.
