Southern root weevil

The Southern root weevil (Otiorhynchus meridionalis) is a significant pest belonging to the Curculionidae family of the Coleoptera order. It is recognized globally as a destructive agent in nurseries, vineyards, and ornamental landscapes, causing damage that is often overlooked until significant plant decline occurs.

This species is highly polyphagous, meaning it feeds on a vast array of botanical hosts. Primary targets include fruit trees, berries, grapes, and various woody ornamentals. Both adults and larvae contribute to plant damage, although their feeding behaviors differ significantly, affecting different parts of the plant anatomy.

Understanding the life cycle is crucial for effective management. Adults are nocturnal, feeding on foliage during the night and hiding in the soil or under debris during the day. Females lay eggs in the soil near the host roots. The larvae spend their development time in the ground, consuming small roots and root hairs, which is the most critical and damaging phase of their life cycle.

The symptoms of infestation are distinct. Adults create irregular, scalloped notches along the edges of leaves. Meanwhile, larval feeding results in root system destruction, which leads to stunted growth, yellowing foliage, and eventually total plant death if the infestation density is high enough to sever critical water supply routes.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is the most successful approach to controlling this pest. Recommended strategies include:

• Physical removal and monitoring using nocturnal checks.
• Application of trap bands to prevent adult movement up the trunk.
• Tillage of the soil to disturb larvae and pupae.
• Targeted chemical treatments during the active adult phase.
• Biological control through the application of entomopathogenic nematodes, which actively seek out and eliminate larvae residing in the soil.
