Description

The strawberry root weevil (Otiorhynchus ovatus) is a member of the Curculionidae family and is a significant pest in both agriculture and horticulture. Known for its wide host range, this beetle causes extensive damage to various crops and ornamental plants globally, making it a challenging opponent for farmers and gardeners alike.

This pest affects a wide variety of species, including strawberries, raspberries, roses, rhododendrons, and various conifer nursery stocks. The broad range of suitable host plants allows the population to thrive in diverse environments, often moving from weedy borders into cultivated fields where they find optimal conditions for reproduction.

The biological cycle consists of egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Most of the lifecycle occurs below ground, where larvae feed on roots. Adult weevils are flightless and strictly nocturnal. Biological control methods, particularly the application of beneficial entomopathogenic nematodes to the soil, have shown high efficacy against larvae. In severe infestations, registered soil-applied or foliar insecticides may be necessary.
