Rotund weevil

The rotund weevil (Otiorhynchus rotundatus) is a member of the Curculionidae family, widely known as a destructive root weevil. These beetles are serious polyphagous pests capable of causing significant economic losses in both commercial agriculture and private horticulture throughout the temperate regions.

These insects attack a diverse range of plant species, including various woody ornamentals, soft fruits like strawberries and raspberries, and young trees. Because of their broad host range, they can survive in almost any diverse garden environment, making them difficult to eradicate completely once established.

The lifecycle of the rotund weevil involves a subterranean larval stage, where they spend most of their time feeding on the roots of host plants. The adults are flightless and nocturnal, emerging only at night to feed on leaves. This behavior pattern allows them to avoid both natural predators and daytime human inspection.

The damage caused by the rotund weevil is twofold. Adults create characteristic notched edges on leaves, which is primarily aesthetic but stressful for the plant. The larvae, however, are far more destructive; by feeding on the root system and crowns, they deprive the plant of water and nutrients, often leading to rapid wilting and plant death.

Management strategies require an integrated approach to be effective. Cultural practices such as maintaining healthy soil structure and rotating crops are essential. Additionally, growers should monitor for leaf damage and apply targeted chemical or biological treatments, such as beneficial nematodes, to the soil to target the larval population effectively.
