Sensitive vine weevil

The Sensitive vine weevil (Otiorhynchus sensitivus) is a member of the Coleoptera order and the Curculionidae family. This pest is recognized as a significant threat to various agricultural and ornamental crops. It is particularly noted for its cryptic behavior, as the adults are nocturnal, making monitoring and identification quite challenging for agronomists.

This weevil species targets a wide range of hosts, including grapevines, berry bushes, and various fruit trees. The damage is twofold: the adults cause characteristic leaf-notching, while the subterranean larvae cause extensive damage to the root systems of the plants. Nursery stock is especially vulnerable to this type of infestation.

The biological cycle typically spans one to two years depending on the climate. Adults emerge in the spring and early summer, feeding at night and seeking shelter in the soil or under debris during the daylight hours. Females oviposit in the soil, and the resulting larvae immediately start feeding on the roots, which allows them to grow rapidly while remaining protected from surface-applied chemicals.

Damage assessment reveals scalloped or notched leaf margins on the foliage, which is a hallmark of adult weevil feeding. However, the most severe economic impact stems from larval feeding. By consuming the lateral roots and attacking the taproot, the larvae disrupt nutrient uptake, leading to plant stunting, yellowing, and eventual plant death under drought stress.

Effective management strategies require a combination of techniques. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) practices should involve mechanical cultivation of the soil during the pupation period to disrupt the lifecycle. Chemical control is most effective against adults during their night feeding phase, utilizing specialized insecticides. Furthermore, biological control agents such as parasitic nematodes are highly recommended for soil application to target larval stages.
