Description
The Black vine weevil (Otiorhynchus sulcatus) belongs to the Curculionidae family and is a significant pest in both agriculture and horticulture. These insects are nocturnal, meaning they feed at night and hide in the soil or under debris during the day. Their inability to fly makes their spread slower, yet their ability to reproduce parthenogenetically (without males) allows a single beetle to start an infestation.
This pest is highly polyphagous, attacking a wide array of host plants. Preferred targets include strawberries, grapes, yews, rhododendrons, and various ornamental greenhouse plants like cyclamens and primulas. By feeding on both roots and foliage, the Black vine weevil compromises the structural integrity and health of the entire plant, often leading to total loss in nursery settings.
The life cycle typically includes one generation per year, although indoor conditions can accelerate this process. Adult females lay eggs in the soil near the plant's base. The white, C-shaped larvae emerge and begin feeding on root hairs and eventually larger roots. After reaching maturity, they pupate in earthen cells within the soil, emerging later as adult beetles to feed on leaves and complete the cycle.
The damage caused by this pest is distinct and often severe. Adult weevils leave characteristic semi-circular notches along the edges of leaves. However, the larvae are the most destructive stage, as they sever roots and girdle the root crown, restricting the plant's water and nutrient uptake.

Cultural practices such as maintaining clean cultivation, using pest-free potting media, and inspecting imported plants are essential to prevent outbreaks.
