Platypod beetle

The platypod beetle (genus Oxoplatypus) is a specialized group of wood-boring insects belonging to the Curculionidae family, subfamily Scolytinae. These beetles are known for their ability to tunnel deep into the xylem of trees, often acting as significant pests in forest environments and plantations.

These insects primarily attack a wide variety of hardwood species. While they often target stressed or dying trees, some species of Oxoplatypus are aggressive enough to infest healthy specimens, disrupting the tree's vascular system and nutrient transport, which can ultimately cause severe crown dieback.

The biology of the Oxoplatypus is unique due to its symbiotic relationship with fungi. Females possess specialized structures called mycangia, used to transport fungal spores into the galleries. Once introduced into the wood, these fungi colonize the tunnels and serve as the exclusive food source for the developing larvae.

Damage is characterized by circular, small-diameter entrance holes on the bark and the accumulation of fine wood dust, known as frass, at the base of the tree. Internally, the tunnels are often stained black by fungal activity, which permanently degrades the quality of the timber, making it unsuitable for commercial use.

Therefore, integrated pest management (IPM) strategies, focusing on early detection and removing host material before new generations emerge, are the most effective methods to limit the beetle's spread.
