Description
Oxycetonia versicolor is a species of beetle belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Scarabaeidae. Often referred to as a type of flower beetle or rose chafer relative, this insect is native to various regions in Asia and is recognized as a significant agricultural and horticultural pest that specifically targets floral structures.
The host range for this pest is diverse, including various ornamental plants and fruit-bearing trees. Roses, chrysanthemums, jasmine, and fruit tree blossoms are particularly susceptible. The adult beetles are highly attracted to pollen and nectar-rich parts of the plant, often congregating in large numbers on open flowers and causing rapid damage during the peak bloom period.
The biological development of this species follows a complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. While the larvae typically reside in the soil or decaying organic matter and do not damage living plant tissue, the adult beetles are the primary life stage of concern. They are diurnal, showing high activity levels during sunny weather when they migrate between flowers.
The damage caused by the beetles is manifested by ragged petals, chewed stamens and pistils, and aborted buds. This physical destruction prevents successful pollination and fertilization in many plant species, leading to severe yield reductions in fruit crops and the loss of aesthetic value in ornamental gardens. In extreme infestations, entire flower beds can be denuded of blooms.
To effectively protect plants, a combination of integrated pest management practices is required.
