Description
The genus Oxylipeurus belongs to the order Mallophaga and the family Philopteridae. These are flightless insects that act as obligate ectoparasites on birds. While they do not damage crops directly, their presence is a significant pest issue in the poultry industry, affecting overall farm productivity.
These parasites primarily infest domestic poultry, including chickens and turkeys. They are highly host-specific, often found clinging to the barbs of feathers near the skin, where they feed on feather debris, dead skin cells, and occasionally secretions from the feather follicles.
The life cycle of Oxylipeurus is completed entirely on the host bird. Females lay eggs at the base of feathers. These eggs hatch into nymphs, which look like miniature versions of the adults. The entire life cycle usually takes several weeks, allowing populations to explode rapidly in poorly managed facilities.
The damage caused by these pests includes intense itching, which leads to excessive preening, self-mutilation, and feather loss. In severe infestations, birds exhibit signs of stress, weight loss, and reduced egg production. Persistent irritation also weakens the bird's immune system, making them more susceptible to secondary infections.
Effective control strategies require a multi-faceted approach. This includes the direct treatment of infested birds with approved insecticides or dusts, thorough cleaning and disinfection of poultry housing to eliminate eggs and nymphs, and implementing strict biosecurity protocols to prevent re-introduction into the flock.
