Description

The turkey louse (Oxylipeurus polytrapezius) is an ectoparasite belonging to the order Mallophaga and the family Philopteridae. It is a highly host-specific pest that exclusively infests domestic and wild turkeys, living its entire lifecycle among the feathers of the host.

This parasite primarily targets the wing and tail feathers of the turkey. By feeding on feathers, skin debris, and dermal secretions, the louse causes physical damage to the plumage, which negatively impacts the bird's thermoregulation and general health condition.

The biological cycle of Oxylipeurus polytrapezius is entirely dependent on the host. Females secure their eggs (nits) to the barbs of the feathers. The development from egg to adult takes several weeks, during which the larvae molt three times. High reproductive rates allow the infestation to spread rapidly throughout a poultry flock.

The economic harm caused by these parasites is significant. Heavy infestations lead to severe itching, skin irritation, and restlessness in birds. This results in reduced feed intake, weight loss, impaired growth in poults, and diminished egg production in adult birds. Furthermore, the constant stress weakens the immune system, making birds more susceptible to secondary diseases.

Effective management strategies focus on strict biosecurity and integrated pest management (IPM) practices. Regular cleaning and disinfection of poultry housing are essential. Treatment involves the application of approved insecticides in the form of powders or sprays directly on the birds or their environment. Providing dust baths containing ash or sand is a traditional and effective preventative measure.
