Description
The blue citrus root weevil (Pachnaeus azurescens) is an insect belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. This species is recognized as a significant pest in citrus-growing regions, often causing substantial economic losses in both fruit orchards and nursery stocks.
The host range primarily includes citrus species such as sweet orange, lemon, lime, and grapefruit. Due to its polyphagous nature, the adult weevils can also feed on the foliage of various other tropical and ornamental plant species found in the same ecological niche.
The life cycle involves four distinct stages. Female weevils lay eggs in clusters between leaves, which are glued together. Upon hatching, the larvae drop to the soil surface, burrow into the ground, and proceed to feed on the root systems, completing their development underground before pupating.
The pest causes two types of damage. Adults cause characteristic serrated or notch-like damage to the leaf margins, which is largely aesthetic but can be severe in large infestations. Larval damage is more destructive, as they consume root tissue, severely impacting water and nutrient uptake, leading to plant decline.
