Citrus root weevil

The citrus root weevil (Pachnaeus litus) is a significant pest belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. It is widely recognized for its negative impact on citrus production, as it affects both the foliage and the root system of host plants, leading to severe economic consequences.

The damage caused by this insect is two-fold. Adults feed on the margins of leaves, creating distinctive notch-like patterns. Conversely, the larvae are considered the most destructive stage, as they dwell underground and consume the fibrous roots of the trees, directly inhibiting the plant's ability to uptake water and essential soil nutrients.

The life cycle of the weevil follows a holometabolous development path: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Eggs are laid in clusters between leaves. Upon hatching, the larvae drop to the soil and burrow into the rhizosphere to begin their feeding process. They eventually pupate in the soil before emerging as adults to repeat the cycle.

Severe infestations result in tree decline, yellowing of leaves, and significant yield losses. Because the larvae remain hidden underground for an extended period, the damage is often discovered only when the tree shows clear signs of stress or wilting, making early detection and preventative measures crucial for orchard health.
