Pachnoda interrupta

Pachnoda interrupta, a member of the Scarabaeidae family and Cetoniinae subfamily, is a significant beetle pest that affects various crops. Known primarily as a major threat to cereal production in East Africa, particularly in Ethiopia, this insect is infamous for its ability to devastate fields in a very short period of time due to its swarming behavior.

The pest primarily targets sorghum crops. The adult beetles possess strong mouthparts that allow them to feed aggressively on the soft tissues of plants. They are particularly attracted to the flowering panicles, which they devour before the grain has a chance to fully develop and mature, resulting in significant yield loss.

The life cycle of this beetle involves both subterranean and aerial stages. Eggs are laid in the soil, where larvae develop by feeding on organic matter, which is generally not considered harmful to crops. However, the adult stage is the primary concern for agronomists, as the beetles emerge in large swarms to feed, mate, and deposit eggs for the next generation.

Damage assessment reveals that Pachnoda interrupta can cause localized destruction of entire harvests. Because they feed on the reproductive parts of the sorghum plant, the damage is irreversible once the flowering stage is compromised. Their swarming nature makes it difficult to predict exactly where they will strike next, increasing the danger to surrounding farms.

Control measures are essential to mitigate the impact of this pest on food security. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) techniques are recommended, which include:

• Early planting of crops to ensure they reach maturity before the peak beetle population emerges.
• Targeted application of insecticides to fields during the onset of swarming.
• Field monitoring to detect early arrivals of the pest and implement control before the population multiplies.
