Pachypasa is a genus of moths belonging to the family Lasiocampidae (lappet moths). These insects are known for their caterpillar stage, which can act as a defoliator for various trees and shrubs. Due to their biology and feeding habits, these moths can cause significant economic losses in fruit orchards and forest plantations if not managed properly.

The host range of Pachypasa includes diverse woody plant species. In agricultural settings, they are particularly noted for attacking fruit trees, where caterpillars feed aggressively on leaves. Young orchards are at the highest risk, as severe defoliation during the growing season can stunt tree growth and reduce overall harvest yields in subsequent years.

The life cycle of Pachypasa typically follows a univoltine pattern, meaning one generation per year. Larvae overwinter in a quiescent state, often protected by silk cocoons or bark crevices. In the spring, they emerge to feed on fresh foliage. The larval stage is relatively long, allowing them to consume large amounts of plant tissue before pupation, which occurs within robust, camouflaged cocoons.

Damage caused by this pest is characterized by extensive defoliation. When outbreaks occur, caterpillars can strip branches entirely, leading to tree stress and a disruption of physiological processes such as photosynthesis. Repeated damage year after year often results in the loss of vigor, susceptibility to secondary pests, and eventually the death of severely weakened trees.
