Pagiocerus fiorii

Pagiocerus fiorii is a significant stored-product pest classified under the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae (subfamily Scolytinae). Originating in the Neotropical regions, this beetle has become a major concern for the agricultural industry due to its ability to cause extensive damage to stored grain stocks, particularly maize, in both tropical and subtropical climates.

The primary host for this pest is maize, but it is known to infest a variety of other seeds and grains. The beetles act as borers, penetrating the pericarp of the seed to reach the endosperm. By consuming the inner parts of the grain, they transform healthy kernels into dust and waste, which results in substantial quantitative and qualitative losses for commercial storage facilities.

The biological cycle of Pagiocerus fiorii is completed entirely within the grain kernel. The adult female deposits eggs inside or on the surface of the seed. Once hatched, the larvae bore inward, creating intricate galleries that disrupt the structure of the grain. After passing through several larval instars and pupation, the adult beetle emerges, often leaving behind a characteristic exit hole.

The damage caused by this insect is severe, as infestations are often difficult to detect until substantial damage has already occurred. Beyond the direct loss of grain mass, the presence of these beetles fosters an environment conducive to secondary infestations by fungi and bacteria. This can lead to the production of harmful mycotoxins, making the contaminated grain unsafe for human consumption or livestock feed.

Effective management strategies against Pagiocerus fiorii rely heavily on preventative warehouse practices and strict quality control. Key measures include maintaining low temperature and humidity within storage areas to limit reproduction.
