Description
Systematic position: Pagiophloeus orientalis is a member of the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. It is recognized as a significant pest affecting various tropical tree species, with a particular affinity for members of the Euphorbiaceae family, primarily rubber trees.
Host plants and damage: The primary target of this beetle is the rubber tree (Hevea brasiliensis). The larvae and adults inhabit the bark and cambium layers of the trunk and branches. Their feeding activities are destructive to the conductive tissues, which directly hampers the plant's ability to maintain healthy physiological processes and latex production.
Biology and life cycle: The life cycle involves complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females deposit eggs into the bark crevices. Once hatched, larvae burrow into the tree, constructing galleries that can expand significantly over time. Pupation typically occurs within the wood or inner bark before the emergence of the adult beetle.
Damage and pest status: Infestations lead to severe bark damage, weakening the trees and making them vulnerable to secondary attacks by fungi and bacteria. High densities of Pagiophloeus orientalis can result in stunted growth, branch dieback, or even the death of the entire tree, causing economic losses in plantation management.
