Palaeolecanium

Palaeolecanium is a genus of scale insects belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Coccidae. These insects are classified as specialized sap-sucking pests that pose a significant threat to various fruit and ornamental tree species, leading to severe physiological stress if infestations remain uncontrolled.

The pest primarily targets pome and stone fruits, including apple, pear, plum, and cherry trees. They are known for forming dense colonies on the bark of branches and young shoots, where they remain sessile for the majority of their lifecycle, feeding on the plant's vascular fluids through their proboscis.

The lifecycle of Palaeolecanium consists of a single generation per year. They typically overwinter as second-instar nymphs sheltered in crevices of the bark or under the scales of woody stems. As temperatures rise in spring, the nymphs resume activity, migrate to young growth, and begin rapid feeding, leading to sexual maturity and reproduction.

The damage caused by these insects includes significant nutrient depletion, yellowing of leaves, stunting of shoot growth, and premature drop of fruit and foliage. Furthermore, the excretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, which coats the bark and leaves in a black fungal layer, severely hindering the plant's ability to perform photosynthesis.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling this pest. Dormant-season applications of horticultural oils can effectively suffocate overwintering nymphs. During the growing season, systemic insecticides are applied when the mobile "crawler" stage emerges, as this is the most vulnerable phase in their development cycle for chemical treatments.
