Description

Palaeopus belongs to the weevil family (Curculionidae) within the order Coleoptera. These insects are highly specialized pests, primarily found in tropical and subtropical regions. In an agronomic context, they pose a significant threat to root crops by developing internally within plant tissues, often causing invisible damage until significant yield loss has already occurred.

The primary host plant affected by this genus is the sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas). The pest is capable of inflicting substantial damage to crops both in the field and during the post-harvest storage period. Due to the cryptic nature of the larvae, detecting an infestation during the early stages of plant growth is exceptionally challenging, complicating industrial vegetable production efforts.

The biology of Palaeopus is intimately linked to the lifecycle of its host plant. Females deposit eggs directly into the tissues of the roots or stems. Upon hatching, the larvae tunnel through the pulp, feeding on plant tissues throughout their development. After pupating inside the host tissue, adult beetles emerge, completing a reproductive cycle that can occur multiple times a year under favorable climatic conditions.

The characteristic damage caused by Palaeopus involves extensive tunneling inside the tubers, with the tunnels often filled with larval frass. This behavior not only degrades the aesthetic and nutritional quality of the produce but also facilitates the entry of secondary fungal and bacterial pathogens. Consequently, infested tubers quickly rot and become unfit for human consumption or processing.

Effective management strategies require an integrated approach focusing on sanitation and cultural practices. Key control methods include:

  • Utilizing only healthy, certified propagation material.
  • Implementing strict crop rotation, avoiding host crops for at least 3-4 years.
  • Deep plowing after harvest to destroy infested plant debris and crop residues.
  • Applying specialized insecticides in areas with high pest pressure.
  • Timely harvesting to reduce the duration of tuber exposure to the soil environment.
