Yam weevil

Palaeopus costicollis is a destructive insect pest belonging to the family Curculionidae within the order Coleoptera. This weevil is recognized as a significant threat to agriculture, specifically impacting the production of yams (Dioscorea spp.) in tropical regions around the world.

The primary hosts of this pest are various yam species. The weevil is unique in its ability to inflict damage both in the field during the growing season and during the post-harvest storage phase. Infestation symptoms are characterized by small, distinct entrance holes on the surface of the tuber, leading to an extensive network of galleries filled with frass. The damage caused by the larvae provides an entry point for secondary pathogens, such as fungi and bacteria, leading to tissue decay and rapid deterioration of the tubers in storage.

Effective management strategies against Palaeopus costicollis involve a multi-pronged approach:

• Selection and planting of high-quality, pest-free tuber pieces.
• Strict sanitation protocols in warehouses to prevent re-infestation of stored stocks.
