Dusky clearwing

The Dusky clearwing (Paranthrene tabaniformis) is a moth species belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the Sesiidae family. These insects are well-known for their remarkable mimicry, appearing almost identical to hornets or wasps, which serves as a defensive mechanism against predators.

This moth primarily targets species within the Salicaceae family, specifically poplars, aspens, and willows. It is considered a significant pest in nurseries, plantations, and urban landscape forestry, where the larvae concentrate their feeding activity on the trunks and branches of young, vigorous trees.

The biological cycle involves the larvae boring into the woody tissue of the host plant. They spend the winter inside these galleries, resuming their feeding activity the following spring. After pupation, the adult moths emerge in early to mid-summer to mate and lay eggs, typically near cracks or wounded areas on the bark.

The damage caused by the larvae is severe. By boring deep galleries into the phloem and xylem, they disrupt the transport of nutrients and water. This often results in stunted growth, the formation of unsightly galls or cankers, and a significant reduction in the tree's structural integrity, frequently leading to breakage in wind-prone areas.
