Description
Taxonomic position: Paranthrene cyanogama belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Sesiidae (clearwing moths). This species is a specialized stem-borer that spends the majority of its larval stage hidden within the woody tissues of its host plants, making management particularly difficult.
Host plants: The primary hosts are various poplar species (Populus). These insects are commonly found in natural forest stands, urban landscapes, and shelterbelts, where they target both mature trees and younger saplings, significantly impacting their growth and structural integrity.
Biology and life cycle: The insect undergoes complete metamorphosis. Adults, which exhibit Batesian mimicry by resembling wasps, are active during the summer. After mating, females deposit eggs on the bark. Upon hatching, larvae immediately bore into the bark and the cambial layer, excavating extensive galleries that weaken the tree from within.

Visible signs include accumulations of frass at the base of the tree, sap weeping from the bark, and canopy dieback.
