Nigra scale

The Nigra scale (Parasaissetia nigra) is a significant pest belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Coccidae. Known for its dark, convex appearance, this insect is a notorious pest in tropical and subtropical regions, frequently causing outbreaks in greenhouse environments where year-round temperatures favor its rapid development.

This species is polyphagous, meaning it feeds on a vast array of host plants. Economically important crops such as coffee, citrus, and various ornamental species like hibiscus, orchids, and ferns are highly susceptible to infestation. The pest typically colonizes the undersides of leaves and young, tender stems, making early detection a primary challenge for growers.

The life cycle of the Nigra scale consists of several stages: egg, crawler (nymph), and adult. Adult females remain stationary, producing a leathery, black scale covering that protects their eggs. Once the eggs hatch, the crawlers emerge and migrate to new parts of the host plant. This dispersive phase is critical for the spread of the infestation within a greenhouse or garden plot.

Damage caused by Parasaissetia nigra is twofold. Direct damage occurs through the continuous extraction of plant sap, which stunts growth and causes leaf yellowing. Indirect damage is caused by the excretion of honeydew, a sugary substance that promotes the growth of sooty mold. This fungus creates a dark, unsightly layer on foliage, which significantly inhibits photosynthesis and reduces the overall vigor of the host plant.

Effective management requires an integrated approach. Cultural practices include pruning and removing heavily infested branches. Chemical control with systemic insecticides is highly effective against the sessile stages, while contact insecticides are used during the crawler emergence period. Furthermore, biological control using parasitoid wasps is often successfully employed to maintain population levels below the economic threshold.
