Parlagena bennetti is a specialized insect pest belonging to the Diaspididae family within the order Hemiptera. This scale insect is recognized for its high host specificity and poses a substantial threat to various tropical and subtropical fruit plantations.

The primary hosts for this species include members of the citrus family (Citrus spp.). The insect attaches itself to leaves, stems, and fruits, extracting vital cellular fluids. This feeding activity causes significant plant stress, weakening the host and drastically reducing the market quality of the fruit produced.

The biology of Parlagena bennetti involves a complex life cycle typical of diaspid scales. The female produces a protective waxy scale under which she lays her eggs. Upon hatching, the mobile nymphs, known as crawlers, move across the plant surface to locate a suitable feeding site, where they eventually settle and begin the sessile phase of their development.

Infestation symptoms include the appearance of chlorotic spots, deformation of leaves, and premature leaf drop. Severe infestations can lead to the wilting of young shoots and the growth of sooty mold on the honeydew-like excretions, which further impairs the plant's photosynthetic capacity and overall health.

Effective management strategies require an integrated approach. This includes the application of systemic and contact insecticides, the use of horticultural oils, and rigorous sanitary pruning practices. Furthermore, quarantine measures for imported nursery stock and population monitoring using pheromone traps during the crawler emergence period are essential for successful control.
