Taxonomic position: The Chinese scale (Parlatoreopsis chinensis) is a member of the order Hemiptera and the family Diaspididae. It is a highly specialized sucking pest characterized by a sedentary lifestyle, with females residing permanently under a protective wax cover, which makes them particularly resilient to environmental stresses and pesticide treatments.

Host plants and economic impact: This species is a polyphagous pest, capable of infesting a wide variety of woody plants. Important host crops include citrus, pomegranate, fig, mulberry, and numerous ornamental trees. The economic damage manifests in reduced fruit yield, stunted plant growth, and a significant loss of market value for nursery stock due to the presence of scales on stems and leaves.

Biology and life cycle: The lifecycle of Parlatoreopsis chinensis progresses through the egg, nymph, and adult stages. Females lay eggs under their protective shields. The primary dispersal phase occurs during the first-instar nymph stage, known as the "crawler" stage. These tiny, mobile nymphs are capable of crawling to new sites on the host plant or being dispersed by wind, birds, or human activity to adjacent vegetation.

Symptoms and damage: Heavy infestations are characterized by a crust-like appearance on the bark of branches and the surfaces of leaves.

The most critical time for chemical intervention is during the crawler emergence period when the insects are not yet protected by a mature waxy shield. Systemic insecticides are generally the most effective choice. Furthermore, quarantine inspections and the removal of heavily infested plant parts through pruning are essential for preventing the spread of the pest within commercial orchards or private gardens.
